SATROnet for households

SATROnet is a metropolitan computer network with access to the internet, build by SATRO ltd., in areas, where we provide cable television services. The main purpose of building this network was to provide our customers with a high speed access to the internet.  Another possibility of SATROnet is that its users may communicate together with a speed much higher, than their pre-paid internet access speed. This speed not limited it just depends on the amount of the actually transported data, and of the location of the two communicating users.
SATROnet is creating a community of users and is an integral part of the internet.  Each user has his unique public IP address, what differs him from the other users on the internet. There is no change or dynamic allocation of various IP addresses. The connection to the internet and SATROnet is not limited by time nor by the amount of transported data. This is how SATROnet differs from other conventional approaches to internet providing in Slovakia.
A customer can choose one of the basic services SATROnet Basic, Home, Junior, Standard, and Professional. These differ in the speed of the connection. Each of the basic services includes one public IP address and an unlimited e-mail account. Further more he can choose from a variety of additional services such as space on the web, additional e-mail address, or another IP address to connect another computer in the household. The number of the offered services will grow, mostly on the needs of the customers. For example, we are planning to build an ICR server, services specific for SATROnet such as searching within SATROnet, gaming servers and so on.

For businesses, the connection to SATROnet is a potential gain. We have individual approach to each customer and offer additional services as creating the whole data infrastructure of the company and its connection to the internet and SATROnet. The prices are also individual depending on the needs of the customer. All the services have a common factor; high quality with matchless low prices.

History of SATROnet

SATRO ltd., as the second largest provider of cable television in Slovakia, has took some time by searching for a possibility to provide customers with a connection to the internet, regarding their demand for a high speed internet connection and their unwillingness to pay for the time spent on the internet as well as for the amount of transported data.
During the years 2003-2004  the technologies necessary for building a network based on our existing infrastructure used for transport cable television signal. The technology permitted us to connect our customers with data connections and equip them with a high speed internet connection, for a relatively low price and without the common limitations of the classic telecom providers. It is a jointure of a few technologies, that has permitted us to reach this goal , they have one common factor; the ethernet.
By the end of the year 2003, on one line of  HFC Klokočina, on the street Na Hôrke we have started an ethernet connection for our first tester. After the first tests, and the verification that the technology of the physical layer, offered by our suppliers actually has the required parameters, we have started with connecting another buildings on the street Na Hôrke and later the streets Beethovenova and Bizetova.  Gradually, until end of July 2004 we have been solving problems related to the growing number of the computers in the network and another testers have been joining in(their number was 80 by the end of the year). At the same time we have been building our own infrastructure in the SIX (Slovak Internet Exchange) and in Nitra we have registered in RIPE Network Coordination Center and have been gathering public IP addresses. Further on we have been testing the equipment and lines used for the data transport to SIX and abroad. In April 2004 we have published a preliminary price list, that has shown, that we want to offer this service for each prospect, therefor this price list had a huge response.
On the 12th of  July 2004 we have published the general contractual terms for the access to the internet and SATROnet and the 28th July 2004 w have started the commercial providing of SATROnet network.
At the beginning the connection was only available in Klokočina (town part of Nitra), but was later extended over the city and the cities Myjava, Topolčany and others will follow.
